Love Clacton - Tendring District Council.

Tendring District Council serves the Essex coastline, including Clacton-on-Sea, its largest town and a place rich in history, natural beauty and community spirit. As part of a £20 million regeneration programme, the Council aimed to revitalise Clacton’s image and boost local pride, tourism and investment.

Project overview.

Client: Tendring District Council

The Council needed a dedicated website to showcase Clacton’s offer to both residents and visitors. Until now, any information about Clacton sat within the broader Tendring District Council website, making it difficult to find and lacking identity. The goal was to create a standalone digital platform focused on tourism, community updates, and investment opportunities.

What we did.

Following a successful public tender, we were commissioned to design and build the official website for the Love Clacton project.

Using our Lark setup, we delivered a user-friendly, fully accessibleWordPress website that brings together everything Clacton has to offer. The site includes:

  • A central hub for events, attractions and local stories
  • Clear signposting for regeneration and investment updates
  • An inclusive, mobile-first responsive design that works across all devices

A WCAG 2.2 AA compliant website.

As a public sector website, accessibility was a core requirement from the outset. We took an “accessible by design” approach, embedding accessibility into every stage of the project—from early wireframes through to final delivery.

The site was built to meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards, ensuring it is usable by as many people as possible, including those with visual, cognitive and motor impairments. Key features include:

  • Clear heading structures and logical content flow
  • High contrast colour palettes and resizable text
  • Full keyboard navigation and screen reader compatibility
  • Accessible forms and interactive components

Accessibility was not treated as a one-off checklist, but as a continuous focus throughout the project. We carried out regular testing and auditing using a combination of automated tools and manual checks. This included targeted unit tests and milestone reviews to ensure the site remained fully compliant and user-friendly at every stage.

The results.

This is Clacton’s first dedicated digital presence, designed to celebrate the town’s identity and bring together everything it has to offer in one accessible place. With a clear user experience, strong visual branding and full WCAG 2.2 compliance, the site supports the Council’s long-term vision to reconnect people with Clacton and raise its profile as a vibrant destination for both visitors and residents.
