Dermatology Web Design: Making a Difference

Over the past few years, we’ve found ourselves a small but growing niche in dermatology, working on projects designed to make a real difference for children, parents, and healthcare professionals alike.

How it all began

Our journey into dermatology web design began in 2022, with the British Society for Paediatric & Adolescent Dermatology (BSPAD). The challenge? To transform their website into a platform that better connected children, parents and healthcare professionals by reflecting their unique needs and experiences.

The original site relied heavily on stock images of babies with flawless skin. This was an approach that failed to resonate with its audience who were looking for support and relatable content. Its complicated navigation also made it difficult to find essential support and resources, leaving them frustrated and unable to get the information they needed.

This is when they approached us, to help understand the core issues and improve the website to better serve their different audiences.

We always believe that great web design for any sector or organisation starts with understanding the problem. This isn’t just something we just say, but that we actively practice, and it begins with the people who use the website. To begin, we suggested just talking to the end users and getting a good handle on their needs and how exactly the website was not meeting their expectations.

In our first user testing session with two young people living with chronic skin conditions, the feedback was clear: the website felt like it was designed for doctors, not them. One participant shared how she would spend hours online searching for someone who looked like her or for resources that understood her struggles.

Like many clients we see, cost was a key factor. The client had previously received a quote from a web agency specialising in charity websites, but the price was much higher than expected (more than double ours) and also came with steep ongoing costs. They questioned whether we could meet their needs without specialising in charity design. Our answer? Great web design for any sector or organisation starts with understanding the problem. By focusing on the project’s objectives, user needs, and defining success, we delivered a bespoke solution that exceeded expectations.

When we tested the final website with the same young people, their reactions validated our approach. They felt the site was now designed for them – an accessible space where they could find meaningful information. For us and the client, that marked true success.

Clinical trial pilot project

Our next venture was Kids in Control, a collaboration with the St John’s Institute of Dermatology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. This pilot project was designed to help children better understand and manage their eczema through education and practical tools.

A standout feature was an animated video tailored to engage young audiences. It simplified complex information, kept their interest, and provided actionable insights for managing eczema. Again this project was very much focused on the end users – giving children the capacity to take ownership of their condition by delivering information in an accessible way.

This project really highlighted the potential for designing websites that are created with specific users in mind. It also showed them the power of creating something entirely bespoke which resonates with its core audience.

King’s College London

Most recently, we partnered with King’s College London’s Paediatric & Population-Based Dermatology Research unit to launch their new website (PpopDerm). The aim was to unify multiple research projects under one cohesive framework while preserving each project’s unique identity.

To meet these goals, we built a bespoke WordPress site, combining user-experience with high customisation. By empowering the team to manage updates in-house, we kept ongoing costs low while delivering a flexible platform ready for future expansion.

The site now effectively showcases the unit’s breadth of work while serving as a powerful hub for stakeholders.

Ppopderm now has a website that can scale with them, ensuring it can grow alongside their evolving needs.

The bigger picture

What makes these projects particularly rewarding is the journey we’ve taken to deliver them.

From focus groups and stakeholder engagement – including children, parents, nurses, doctors, and researchers – to prioritising accessibility for diverse audiences. Every step has deepened our understanding of the dermatology landscape.

Each project has reinforced our belief in the power of thoughtful design and technology to drive meaningful impact. We’re excited to continue exploring this space and look forward to creating more solutions that truly matter.

The shifting landscape of Google Search and AI Content Generation

2024 has been an interesting year for the world so far. Perhaps the biggest changes, however, have not been quite as devastating as a giant hurricane, nor as dramatic as an election. No – the largest shifts have, in many ways, happened in a world not visible without the use of a device: the online world.
