Hugh has joined our team as a Senior Web Developer and has answered some quick questions to help everyone get to know him a little better.

Tell us about your working life to date… how did you end up here at WCD?

During in my first professional role in 2016, I had the opportunity to work with the BBC to create a health & safety document management system for their broadcast infrastructure upgrade. The skills I learned while working on this project were invaluable to me as junior developer.

A few years later I had the chance to expand my skillset further in the e-commerce sphere. I enjoyed creating, maintaining, extending and optimising a large bespoke codebase and learned so much with regards to getting a product from a shelf in a warehouse all the way to a customer’s door (and all the ways this can go wrong!).

Ultimately, as a Carer for my brother with learning difficulties, my main goal is to contribute to the accessible web. I’m a strong proponent of ‘ease of use’, intuitive design and incorporating the most modern accessibility features the web has to offer.

What website would be on your bucket list to create at some point?

I’d love to build a music sharing platform geared towards discovering small local artists. I feel there would be something very satisfying about creating a platform that helps connect people.

It would also be a great opportunity to use concepts from all different disciplines of web development in 1 project.

Windows or Mac?

Although all of my previous professional development experience has been on Windows so far, WCD are making a very convincing case for Mac. As yet undecided!

What do you like to do outside of work?

When I’m not programming in my spare time, I’ll be trying to fix my beautiful, rusty, MOT-less Mk3 Toyota MR2. That or trying to track down yet another oil leak or mystery ‘clunk‘ from my BMW e46 3-Series. Besides cars, I’m heavily into Photography and music production and I own a few too many 90’s synthesizers.

Favourite sports team/film/band?

I’ve never really been in to sports much and I’m not up to date with much modern cinema but I’m a huge fan of anything Quentin Tarantino.

My music taste changes too much week by week but at the moment I’m listening to a lot of Royksopp.
